Forcing trash service
I lived in this community for over 20 years and we could never afford the trash service. So I do a lot of composting and recycling, making a small amount of trash that can be disposed of for less cost..Well, I found out that instead of having a large truck come in once a week, the community past a vote, (which I heard they changed the rules on how a vote passes), that they will have their own trash pick up. Instead of once a week, a smaller truck will come around 4-5 days a week, dividing up sections of the community. This will start June 1.They did this because having the independent service come in once a week was destroying our roads. (our roads by the way, which are not fixed properly in the first place)Then a couple days ago, I found out this service is mandatory. In other words, we are going to be charged whether we use the service or not. We are already having financial problems and this extra 50.00 every three months will hurt us, as we are barely making it from paycheck to paycheck. I don't know if we can ask them to not charge us, but I think it is worth a call..In the meantime, I am sitting here and saw they are dropping off trash cans, (which some are not happy...
One Person's Trash is Another Person's Profit
Because I have a compost heap to make dirt for my garden, and I do not buy or use many processed foods, and also recycle many things, my household does not generate a lot of trash. So like the cable TV which I never watch, I have to pay for garbage pickup every week even though they pick up at the most once a month. That adds up! That made me wonder about how other people live. Do you generate a lot a trash? What do you do with it? Do you have to pay someone to pick it up or do you take it somewhere or what? Below is a picture of one of my composting bins. Using it is much better than having to buy potting soil.
Environmental Musings on Landfill Management -- Your Opinions Are Welcome
Landfills Into ForestsI had a recent entry wherein I was speculating about garbage management. I mentioned the possibility of dumping on a valley and then covering those up and planting trees. Far fetched? Apparenly not. In New York, one of the biggest landfills was transformed into a park. Called the Fresh Kills Park, it's three times the size of Central Park or around 2,200 acres! And it's not the only one. The Leichner Landfill (in Utah I believe) will also be transformed into something ecologically friendly. Landfills require six (6) inches of soil everyday to cover the day's dump to prevent the latter from making contact with the air. To turn it into a park will require a tremendous amount of soil. What struck me in one of the articles I read was that the cheapest way to get the needed amount of soil o First point: I'm sure there are concerns about walking around in what used to be a highly toxic dump. Well don't turn it into a park; turn it into a forest instead. Plant and nurse the trees and leave them be. Let the trees quietly provide us with oxygen even as the toxic levels are lowered. And if there are walls surrounding the place, there won't be any illegal...
Does anybody else have an interest in building a sustainable house?
I'm talking about building and living in your own natural sustainable 'green' house. I've researched and become obsessed with the ideas of a community of neighbors gardening, composting, and being happy in nature together. Building houses with their own hands out of cob, tires, bottles, adobe, rammed earth, straw, or just about any combination of recyclable materials. Anyone else think about this?
End of Flushing Toilets?
If World Toilet Organization founder Jack Sims has his way, the flush toilet will be in the sewer of history replaced by dry composting toilets. "The concept of the flushing toilet was unsustainable."* Australia is proposing a 'toilet tax' in an attempt to get folks to flush toilets less often as well as take shorter showers. * http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,24670784-2,00.html
Not A Killer
Well Tuesday we had our first frost in my area of Minnesota. It was not a kiilling frost though. So on Monday afternoon I had to take care of my garden to prepare it for the frost. Instead of covering my tomatoes etc I just picked all the green tomatoes to store. Usually we get a few frosty mornings before a killer frost. I usually cover them with a taqrp or burlap covers for the first frost. But I went ahead and picked the tomatoes anyhow. I pulled all the plants up from the soil tossing them aside for composting. So if you're in an area that gets cold in the winter, do you cover your plants for the first frost? Or do you just harvest them and get it over with that way? Have any new topics for articles for associatedcontent?
Currently I am writing for associatedcontent. I am doing really well there and earned over 400 dollars last month with them. I currently write a lot of childrens activities to make my money. effective microorganisms v.s. bad bacteria, etc.
I've been using em (effective microorganisms)for a long time now,and very happy with it. Now I've found a way on how to contribute on saving the planet,I use e.m. to make organic compost, and was able to neutralize back gassing everytime you flush the toilet,it lessens the sludge in the waste water tank, that emits bad odors back out the sink even in your kitchen,it cleans your drain pipelines,I even spray it on droppings of stray cats and dogs in my backyard,it eliminates the odor before I add them to my composting bin.You can get familiar with it if you go to www.emro.jp or www.emrousa.com,thats where I got the solution to my problems before.:-)
Too busy to be frugal
Life has been terribly hectic recently, and as a result I've been slacking in my efforts to be frugal in the kitchen. The other day I discovered a bag of strawberries I'd bought as a treat for the kids, only they were mouldy and good for nothing but composting. And it wasn't the first fruit and veg wasted recently either, I could kick myself as it's nothing but money down the drain (or in the compost heap in my case!.Am I the only one who's habits slip when life gets busy? How do you ensure that foodstuffs don't accidentally spoil when your concentration is elsewhere?
How To Compost...
Can anyone give me the how too, on beginning a compost in my yard? I am trying my hardest to live greener, and the less trash I throw away due to composting will be just a little way to help lessen the landfill size.
