Homemade compost bins.
well today while I was outside cleaning up the yard and sorting through junk...I came across some plastic garabge bins without the wheels on them. So they are useless for there actual purpose. And I had an idea as I was searching online for compost bin directions...originally I was going to use a plastic 55 gallon drum so I can make a contraption to turn it...blah blah. Well I came across one site tht suggested using a trash can, poke holes all over it, make sure there is a lid and just turn it once or twice a week. I am all about reusing things that are just lying around and I want to make my garden very organic next year. So here is my quesiton for homemade compost. Do I have to use it right away when it is ready or can I just keep adding things and turning it like usual? Is there any drawbacks to composting in the winter or does it matter seasonally? Thanks in advance.
Compost or trash bin
A week and a half ago, a friend of mine sprayed the dandelions and since then I have cut the back yard twice. I just bagged the grass and put it in the back to pick up, but then I thought, I need to make some compost and it gets rather hot and i have to protect around my strawberry plants. So I was wondering how soon after spraying for weeds can you use the grass clippings, instead of putting it out in the trash? Thanks.
EarthDay
Hello FriendsWhat will you do for EarthDay?Do you do anything special?Do you even celebrate it?I will be doing some plantingand playing in the dirt a bit.I am green as I can afford but amopen to new ideas..have any?xoxoxoxoxox
Do you have a compost heap or bin?
Do you put your kitchen and garden waste for compost? I started about a year go with a bin the local council sold at a bargain rate to encourage us to compost waste instead of having it hauled away. The results havew been great and just recently I had some lovely soil to distribute amongst the flower beds. Is there anything unusual you put for compost? I've started rippping up cardboard tubes and boxes into small pieces and adding it to the green or vegetable waste. They call this 'brown' content. What about you?
How to compost
Lots of people are talking about organic gardening and composting. I read a lot about it and it seems difficult. However,I seen that all you need to do is find a spot; lay down some leaves, grass clippings, dead plant material and vegetative food scraps; keep adding to the pile; keep it moist, turn it regularly. This doesn't sound that hard but does it work? Is there anything else that I need to know?
Spring To Do List
Now that is upon us we all have many things to do preparing for the spring/summer months. This shot shows one chore I got done recently on my to do list. I replaced all the batteries in my solar powered lights. These are on my front deck as the ground is still frozen a bit that I can't stick them in the ground. I've started my composting again, Cleared the yard of doggie doo. Ewwww! Raked some areas of my flower beds and trimmed them back. Do you have a large Spring to do list? Have you started anything to prepare for the warmer times? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~
Where's That Can Dang It?
RRR. Have you heqard of this? It is the 3 "R's". They stand for, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. I practice this each and everyday myself. This is a shot of the aluminum cans I save for cashing in at a later time. I have a large box in my garage full of aluminum cans as well as this one. I also recysle plastic etc with my regular garbage pickup. Do you practice the 3 "R's"? at all? Do you recycle and make sure to buy products made from recycled products? Do you compst anything as well? I have a compost pile and I compost a lot of paper products this way as well.HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~
paying to put garbage out to the road
are you for this or against and do you have to do it. where i live we don't but i now some people who have to buy garbage tags. so you have to put them out on your bags to put them by the road for the garbage man to take them. i think it forces people to recycle and compost more. could be a good idea but not for those who are allready strugging for money but it definately will make people think about what they through out
What are some of the things you do for the earth?
I recycle, and my sister composts. We try not to use a lot of water and energy, and trying not to shop much. What do you do to take care of earth, and what are a few tips you can share with us about how to keep our planet healthy and green?
How to Go Green?
Today the biggest problem that mankind is facing is Global warming... What according to you we can do to prevent the harmful affects on the environment. How can we help the environment recover from its current state?
