| Reusable bag and shopping points | | In this time of Global warming, establishments, especially supermarkets, are trying to do their part in saving the world. Some have reusable "green bag" promos. When a customer brings his own green bags instead of using the store's plastic bags, there are shopping points credited to him.My brother and I are pretty pissed at a certain store because they wouldn't credit us the points for the bag. Their store policy is that the bag must be 3/4 full. What the?! I don't see the logic in this. We bring our own bags and they don't give us our due points. My view here is that the purpose of the program is for everyone to do their part in saving the world, at least with this simple thing. Just because the bag isn't 3/4 full doesn't mean it's ineligible. They are charging for extra bags and don't they like it that they saved some bucks because the customers use their own bags? Also, what if the bag is just 1/4 full yet it contains something expensive? I really don't see the logic here.Do stores in your country have reusable bags and shopping points too? If you are from the same country as me, do you know the store I am talking about (although let's not mention the name)? Have you... | |

The green giveaway of the moment -- the reusable shopping bag -- is a case study in how tricky it is to make products environmentally friendly. It's manufactured in China, shipped thousands of miles overseas, made with plastic and could take years to decompose. It's also the hot "green" giveaway of the moment: the reusable shopping bag.The bags usually are printed with environmental slogans as well as corporate logos and pitched as earth-friendly substitutes for the billions of disposable plastic bags that wind up in landfills every year. Home Depot distributed 500,000 free reusable shopping bags last April on Earth Day, and Wal-Mart gave away one million. One line of bags features tags that read, "Saving the World One Bag at a Time."But well-meaning companies and consumers are finding that shopping bags, like biofuels, are another area where it's complicated to go green. "If you don't reuse them, you're actually worse off by taking one of them," says Bob Lilienfeld, author of the Use Less Stuff Report, an online...
| | Do people recycle more for the sake of the planet nowdays? | | I am wondering, I am recycling more and more.
I see it as a way to help the planet and the people.
I carry with me tote bags like the one on the pic so I do not have to get plastic bags, they are more convenient to carry on the bus as well.
My favorite ones are from Walmart, they are black but have the same slogan.
So what do you think
Do people recycle more? Should they avoid plastic bags like I do?

| | do you use tote bags instead of plastic grocery bags? | | I always thought this was such a great idea, to use tote bags, but of course, never followed through with it except for once. I bought a small, fold-up tote bag that I kept in my purse and ONE time I remembered that I had it with me and so I used it for my grocery purchases.Recently I was at Jewel Osco (also known as Albertson's), and they were selling tote bags for $1 each. So I bought 4 or 5 and I used them instead of putting my groceries into plastic bags. The bags are green and they say "Earth Day Every Day", which is one of my favorite sayings and there's a pic of Earth on the bag. I was impressed with the tote bags and here's why:#1 Much better for the environment, which includes us, ya know.#2 Held a WHOLE lot more than those little plastic grocery bags#3 A lot more sturdier than those flimsy plastic bags too!Today we were at Wal-Mart, getting into a line to check out and I notice tote bags! $1 each. They're black and in white iron-on lettering they say, 'paper or plastic?' and underneath that, in green iron-on lettering, it says 'neither'.Now I like the saying, I like how the green stands out on the black. But iron-on? COME ON, WAL-MART, HOW CHEAP... | |
| | Today at the grocery store | | As some of you know I am having car troubles and it has been a very long week. Even though my car is running hot I had to go out today because I left something very valuable at the school and I had to retrieve it (fortunately it was still there) and I had no food in the house so I had to go to the store.I went to the drug store first because I needed paper products and they usually have something on sale. I went to one located in a sort of strip mall type shopping area that also has a supermarket. Naturally, they didn't have any good deals even though today is payday and I finally have some money to shop with.I got one roll of paper towels and one of toilet paper and some candy and then went over to the supermarket. In the very front were some pretty sunflowers so I stopped to look and all the flower bunches were three for $10. I haven't bought flowers in months so I picked out three bunches, got a little fruit, cereal bars, some cheese and something to drink (single tea and juice). After looking at the wine and some other things I decided if I was going to pay those prices I may as well drive a few more blocks to Whole Foods which was kind of on the way home. I get to... | |
| | Reusable bags are a big scam. | | Ok, all my stores now charge for bags, so, like all the "green" sheeple, I have bought those reusable bag and bins. Now, that's all well and good, but, now what am I supposed to line my kitchen garbage with? I still have to buy plastic bags, so, I'm no further ahead. What do I pick up doggie poo with now? Again, have to buy plastic bags. Everywhere I go, I am also getting "free" reusable bags with some company's logo on it. What happens to them? Probably end up in a landfill somewhere. Same with the bins, they'll end up in the landfull someday. Why can't we just go back to paper bags like the old days? Surely they could make them out of recycled newspapers. I think the companies making those plasticized reusable bags are wringing their hands together with glee with this whole movement. Are you green? | |
| | Reusable Shopping Bags: How do you like them? | | I've made some reusable shopping bags, which are actually made to be like the Target plastic shopping bags instead of the standard tote fashion. I've used them for over a month now and love them, you can get 2-4 plastic bags worth of groceries or items into just one of these bags because they are so sturdy. I'm going to make some to sell on my Etsy shop but want to change them up a bit so that they really serve everyone's needs. So my question is, what do you like in a reusable shopping bag? Seperate compartments or dividers in some bags so glasses won't clink around? Pockets? Bags for cold items? Bags for produce? Big bags? Little bags? Flat bottom bags? Padded straps? Color preferences? What are your needs when it comes to using a reusable bag? Thanks! | |
| | EarthDay Soon BYOB Yup you got it! | | Hi All,Do you bring your own bag when you shop?I haven't been always but will be more careful about this now.I got this email...here's a quote from it"Okay, we’ve all heard this one, but it’s true. Neither paper nor plastic is the ideal choice. Paper is accepted in more recycling programs, but only approximately 20% is recycled, and most bags can end up in landfills. Plastic bags not only can take a thousand years to decompose and but use up nonrenewable resources. The best choice? Bring your own reusable bag. A sturdy, reusable one can take the place of hundreds or maybe even thousands of single-use bags over its lifetime.Get Clean offers lightweight, sturdy, reusable shopping bags in a bright green color with the Get Clean logo, so you can spread the word while you shop."I just ordered some. They only cost $9.30 for 6 of them. I'm ordering a few so when B-Days,Christmas, etc comes I can use them to make up a gift bag instead of using paper gift bags that just clog up the landfills! That's about $1.50 each...and they can be used for outting also! BTW for those of you that think I am promoting my... | |

Why not craft your own reusable bag out of them by crocheting them together? http://www.marloscrochetcorner.com/Plastic%20Bag%20tote.htmlIt's actually a really cute and attractive little bag. I think you could make them for family and friends and they'd be really impressed. What do you think?
| | Eco bag is an 'unethical con' | | But the bags are made using
cheap labour in China — and
thousands of litres of fuelhave been used to get themhere.
Campaigners said Sainsbury’s“green” credentials had
been damaged. But the company
hit back, saying the bags
had not been flown from
China, to reduce the
environmental impact.
And it said it had bought“carbon credits” — a
worldwide industrial
scheme to reduce
greenhouse gases. A
spokesman added: “Our
intention was to create
a reusable bag that
eliminated plastic bags.”
